On a winter day, stopping by Lianchuan where Huang Dongxi lives in reclusion” by Monk Liangqi (fl. 14th century)

For a visit to Recluse Huang towards the end of the year,

A light boat at dawn merges into the clouds along the East Brook.

Water rises under the willows to the delight of geese and ducks;

Sun comes out on the sands for gulls and egrets to share.

Fragrance of goji berries floats up from the tea bowls;

Breath of loquat blossoms mingles with the burner’s smoke.

Yet what a pitysuch a refreshing gathering is hard to come by,

Another day on the South River, [I] shall miss you again.
