兹晨戒流火,
商飆早已驚。
雲天收夏色,
木葉動秋聲。
A warning this morning from the falling Fire [1]
Already startled a current of cool air.
As the cloudy sky draws back the colours of summer,
Through woods and leaves rustles the sound of autumn.
* From Peng Dingqiu 彭定求 (1645-1719) et al. eds., Quan Tang shi 全唐詩 (Beijing: Zhonghua shuju, 1960), 468.
[1] The phrase liu huo 流火 (falling Fire) refers to the star Antares (known as Dahuo 大火, or Great Fire) moving westwards day by day as the summer draws to a close.
